Cupping techniques

Glass cups that gently lift the skin and muscles, combined with gentle stretches and slow breathing — for necks, shoulders and backs that carry a lot.

The tradition

An old, Greek story

Ancient Greece

The sikya — the cupping vessel — appears on ancient Greek physicians' reliefs, and the Hippocratic texts describe its use.

East & Middle East

Parallel traditions grew in Chinese medicine and across the Middle East, where the practice has continued for centuries.

In the Greek home

Many Greeks remember a grandmother with cotton, a flame and little glasses. We keep the warmth of that care — with modern cups and oil.

The technique

Lift instead of press

Static cups

A few cups rest for a few minutes on areas that hold tension. Instead of pressing, they gently lift the tissue.

Gliding cups

With oil on the skin, the cups glide slowly along the muscles of the back, shoulders and neck.

Breath & rest

Suction is always adjusted to you. The session closes with slow breathing and a few minutes of stillness.

A session

Warmth, cups, stillness

  1. Check-in. Where you feel tension, how much pressure you like, your health history.
  2. Preparation. A little warm oil on the skin, so the cups move smoothly.
  3. Cups. Static first, then gliding, on the areas that need it.
  4. Stretches. A few gentle Thai stretches for neck and shoulders, timed with the breath.
  5. Rest. A few minutes of stillness — optionally with a singing bowl.

About the marks

Cups often leave round, reddish or purple marks. They usually don't hurt and fade on their own within a few days. If you have an event or a beach day coming up, tell us — we can work with gliding cups only, which tend to leave lighter marks.

What the research says

Honestly, without hype

Research on cupping is smaller than for breathing or sound. Here is what we know.

Randomised trial · 50 adults

Five cupping sessions over two weeks reduced chronic neck pain compared with a waiting-list group. [16]

Systematic review & meta-analysis

Dry cupping was found to reduce pain in chronic neck pain and non-specific low back pain. [17]

2025 review · versus sham

Compared with sham cupping, the difference in pain was uncertain — researchers call for larger studies. [18]

So we offer cupping for what it is: a warm, pleasant technique that many people find soothing for tension — not a medical treatment. All sources
